OUTDOOR ACTIVITIES
For outdoor enthusiasts, Salem has everything from golfing to
cycling; fishing to boating, as well as an abundance of
wildlife viewing. With mountains all around and the ocean only
an hour away, snow skiing, hiking, scuba diving, surfing,
beach combing and much more can all be done in a day!
THE OREGON GARDEN
The Oregon Garden, a 24-acre world-class display garden east
of Salem in the Silverton foothills recently opened to the
public and plans to eventually showcase regional ornamental
and agricultural landscape. Garden workshops and educational
events are ongoing, and features a children's garden, as well.
The facility also hosts outdoor concerts and private
weddings/receptions in the pavilion area and expects to draw
over a million visitors per year.
FAIRS AND FESTIVALS
Local fairs, festivals and events include Salem Saturday
Market, the World Beat Festival, Keizer's Iris Festival, the
Bite of Salem, the Marion County Fair and the Oregon State
Fair. Long-standing community traditions include the
Salem Art Fair and Festival in Bush's Pasture Park, now in
it's 52nd year, and annually attracts more than 100,000
participants. It is considered one of the top ten community
events on the west coast!
THE REED OPERA HOUSE
The Reed Opera House, also in downtown Salem, opened in 1869
with the community's first theatrical production of "The
Female Gambler." Now an elegant specialty shopping mall with a
3rd floor ballroom, the Reed Opera House has retained its
historic appearance and atmosphere while it serves as a unique
commercial space in the heart of the city. The Reed is
host to offices and numbers one-of-a-kind shops featuring
everything from lighting and home decor to fine clothing and
locally hand-crafted items. Dining choices at the Reed range
from classic Greek food to soups and sandwiches.
RIVERFRONT PARK
A 23-acre park located in downtown Salem by the Willamette
River with an amphitheater, play equipment and large grassy
areas. (See the
Salem Visitor Center Info). This beautiful park is now home to the
Salem
Riverfront
Carousel; the fabulous
A. C. Gilbert Discovery Village
(a Salem native who was the creator of the Erector Set,
American Flyer Trains, Mysto Magic sets, chemistry and
telegraph sets in the early 1900s) as well as the EcoEarth
Ball. Facilities also included are restrooms, picnic
tables jogging/walking/biking paths and three "mutt-mitt"
dispensers.
BUSH'S
PASTURE PARK 90+ acres with
2,763 trees; 49+ acres of grassy areas; 22+ acres wild and
undeveloped
Facilities include: 1 ball field; 12 horseshoe courts; 4
playground structures; 24 play equipment pieces; 7 drinking
fountains; 86 picnic tables; 16 benches; 1554 linear feet of
sidewalks-concreted; 3982 linear feet of walks and
paths-asphalt; 770 linear feet of gravel trails; 9638 linear
feet of soft surface jogging path. Also features:
lighted tennis courts; rose gardens and flower beds. Bush Barn
Art Center and Gallery; Bush House Museum and Soap Box Derby
tracks.
MINTO-BROWN
ISLAND PARK 898+ acres with
12,286 trees; 16+ acres of grassy areas; 66 acres of wild
undeveloped area. Features include: 1 play structure; 6 play
structure activities; 8 portable toilets; 1 shelter; 2
drinking fountains; 13 picnic tables; 7 benches; dog exercise
area; 51,955 linear feet of walks and paths in asphalt and
25,238 linear feet of soft surface jogging paths.
